Lavender grown in Norfolk
|

Lavender, lavandula augustifolia, was
a favourite bath time cleanser for the ancient Romans, the generic and common name are thought to derive from the latin lavare,
meaning "to wash". It has been cultivated in Norfolk for many generations, and supplied to medieval city folk in posies. These
days, it is grown and distilled in Norfolk, by a farmers co-operative, our lavender is wonderful for every one, with
a gentle, light, floral scent.
It can be very beneficial for the skin, as it is a known powerful antiseptic. While some people
find the relaxing scent good for headaches and insomnia. Calming and refreshing, lifting the spirits. Need we say more !
No wonder its the number one aroma in the world.

Marshmallow, Althaea officinalis, sometimes
called "seashore mallow", grows all around on the Norfolk coast and marshes. The generic name Althaea is derived
from the Greek word altho, "to cure", while the specific name officinalis refers to its long history as
a medicinal plant, used since Roman times, and as a confection. The root contains 25 percent mucilage, 11 percent sugar, 38
percent starch and 11 percent pectin. Sadly, modern marsh mallows are not made from the plant, but a flour, sugar gum made artificially
pink.
The marsh mallow is valued particularly for its high mucilage content,present throughout the
plant. It can have a soothing effect and has been used down the ages for its softening, healing properties, as
it is said to retain moisture in the skin.
An amazing local plant.

Boudicca's Woad
the last Queen of Norfolk
|
|
|
Boudicca, the last Queen of Norfolk and her Iceni tribe,
used woad, isatis tinctoria, to paint their skin and colour their cloth. In todays world, we can continue the tradition,
by using our wonderful woad soap, since it has been discovered, that the oil from the seed is excellent for
the skin. This is an amazing, creamy soap steeped in local history.
Boudicca was born in or around 30AD, and was married
to King Prasutagus of the Iceni tribe in 48-49AD. During this time Britain was under Roman rule, with the Iceni located in
East Anglia. When King Prasutagus died, he left the bulk of his lands to the Emperor Nero of Rome and a smaller part
of his of kingdom, he left to Boudicca and his two daughters. Rome, however, decided it wanted all the estate and this
led to ferocious battles, as the fierce, warrior Queen defended her land.
Painted with woad, the Iceni must have made a frightening
opponent,as they marched on towards Colchester. When they reached Londinium, the Romans finally defeated them, and
in doing so, Norfolk lost its final queen.

Forest Pine, Juniper & Bay |

This soap has the crisp, fresh aroma of a walk in the
pine forest on our beautiful coast. I've added the hot, peppery edge of juniper, juniperus communis, essential
oil and the woody masculine scent of bay, laurus nobilis, often used to boost circulation.
All the essential oils used here have similar properties and make a superb bath/shower bar,
ideal after sports or physically strenuous activity.
Pine, pinus palustris, is antiseptic, antiviral and stimulating, whilst juniper and
bay are warming and energising.
